About the Department

The history of the Department of Physics dates back to the year 1967. The subject then, however, used to be offered as ‘Pass’ subject. The Department started its journey as an Honours Department in the year 2002. With the whole-hearted support of Dr. Pushpita Ranjan Bhattacharya, who was the Principal at that time and the tireless effort of Dr. Dilip Majumdar, the head of the Department, the vision became a reality. Our first batch consisted of six students and one might be proud to mention that all of them qualified as Honours Graduates.

At present, we have three teaching staff and two non-teaching staff in the Department. With the sincere and tireless effort of the teachers as well as the non-teaching staff, we are heading along smoothly. Along with the scheduled classes, the class routine has provisions for remedial classes for looking back and removing the confusions of the previous classes, if any. Apart from that, the teachers are always available and involved in informal discussion sessions with the students.

It’s a specialty of our Department that the students have access to the Laboratory even outside the scheduled hours for Practical classes and teachers make themselves available to help them during those hours.

We have three laboratory rooms, together with a dark room, that are equipped with almost all the experimental set ups of all Semesters, in accordance with the current CBCS syllabus. Apart from the Central Library, we have a Seminar Library with fair collection of books, accessible to both students and staff. There is a Smart Class, which we make ample use of. There are two computer rooms which we can access and they have more than enough accommodation for the students of our Department.

Over the years the department has produced many alumni who are now successful in their respective fields. Many of them are pursuing higher education in different institutions of repute in India and abroad. Alumni are in contact with the department and often take part in various departmental activities.

We conduct mentoring session for the students, sometimes formal, but often informal, in which we offer a patient hearing to all kinds of problems of the students – academic, personal, domestic, financial and try to resolve them as far as practicable.

Together, we feel that our Department (including the teachers, non-teaching staff and the students) is a Family and we are committed to continue with that spirit.
