Job Opportunities

         After completing the B. Sc. (Hons) course in Physics, one has a multitude of career options for the future. There are two major divisions among these options : one may proceed for higher degrees in the subject, e.g., the Master and the Ph.D. degree; or else, one may opt for some job.

         After completing the Bachelor course, one may undertake a two years’ B.Ed. course (provided one has 50 % marks) and subsequently appear in an eligibility test, like TET and subsequently face the interview, to secure a teaching post in a school.

         Other jobs available at this level are : Scientific Assistant in IGCAR (Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research), Scientific Assistant in Forensic Laboratory, the job of a Fingerprint Expert, job in DRDO (Defense Research and Development Organization ), etc.

         To study Physics at the Master level, one has to join some University / College within /outside the state. Quite a few colleges within the state now offer master course in Physics. An M.Sc. or a B.Tech. degree in a related subject like Electronics, Computer Science, Instrumentation, Atmospheric Science, Marine Science, etc., may also be opted for. One may also join in an Integrated M.Sc. course, which are offered by many Institutes inside and outside West Bengal. One may appear in the JAM examination for pursuing such integrated course in a IIT/NIT.

          After completing the Master’s course, one may join as a Scientific Officer In BARC /ISRO after written test and interview. One may also apply for a similar position in Space Application Center, if one has 65% marks in M.Sc. One may also opt for the post of a Geophysicist through UPSC. One may also pursue the Post M.Sc. diploma course in Radiation Physics at Jadavpur University / BARC.

          After receiving the M.Sc. / Ph.D. degree, one may appear in the Examinations like UGC-NET or SET and subsequently face the interview, to be recruited as an assistant Professor in a college. (A minimum of 55% marks in M.Sc. is necessary for the general candidates and 50% for

the minority/protected groups). One is eligible for a teaching post in Polytechnic college without clearing the NET examination, provided one secures 60% marks.

 

           For a research career, one may appear in the NET/SET for Examination for ensuring scholarship, while working for the Ph.D. degree. One may also appear in the IIT-JAM examination for pursuing research work in an IIT /NIT and the JEST examination for Ph.D./Integrated Ph.D. in some enlisted institutes. Some Institutes like TIFR, ISI etc. conduct their own national level tests for such recruitments.

           In short, a motivated and hard-working student of the present course has all sorts of openings, with an academic or a job-oriented career, to a bright future ahead.
