Economics as a General course subject was introduced in Vijaygarh Jyotish Ray College in 1950, the year in which the college was founded. The Economics Honours course was started in the year 2001.
Any student who has passed with Mathematics in the H.S./equivalent level is eligible to opt for Economics Honours. However, no such requirement is relevant for the ‘General’ course.
Students have access to departmental computers with internet facilities.
The main motto behind the introduction of the subject was to make students familiar with the fundamentals of Economics and to enhance their employment opportunities.
