Vijaygarh Jyotish Ray College was originally established by people who settled in Bijaygarh after being ousted from East Pakistan (now Bangladesh), aiming to provide education and culture to their children. They collected funds despite facing challenges of food, health, shelter, and education, and established Vijaygarh Jyotish Ray College in 1950, dedicated to the children of the locality.
The College had two shifts—Day and Evening—under a single administration and Principal. The Evening Shift started in 1960 to serve students engaged in daytime work and to overcome infrastructural constraints, offering B.Com (Honours & General) and later B.A. General in 1965.
To ensure efficient management, the post of Professor-in-Charge (the senior-most teacher in the Evening section) was sanctioned by the Education Department and University of Calcutta. The Professor-in-Charge managed all administrative and academic duties for the Evening Shift under the supervision of the Principal.
Currently, the Department of Commerce operates under the Day Section to streamline administration and optimize resources. The college has also improved space availability, allowing smoother conduct of classes.
